Samsung has come up with a mission to aggressively expand its portfolio of affordable phones to provide consumers with sufficient options to move away from competition like Ready, Honor, and Nokia in 2019. In the three-month period, the company has launched three Galaxy M-Series phones and three Galaxy A-Series phones in India. All thesis devices slot between Rs 5,000 and Rs 20,000, and you can expect some of them to overlap with each other. For example, the Galaxy A30 is a phone whose price is actually close to the Galaxy M30.
Today, we will test Samsung's new Samsung Galaxy A31 which, on paper, should be an upgrade to the Galaxy A30s. Compared to the previous model, the new model comes with a fourth rear camera, a bigger battery, a high-resolution display, full support of Samsung Pay, and of course high price tag. The phone is available in only one configuration with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. It costs Rs 21,999. Will Galaxy A31 be able to make a place in our list of top smartphones coming under Rs 25,000? let's watch.

Samsung Galaxy A31 Design

Even though the design of the Samsung Galaxy A31 is not exactly fresh compared to other models coming in Samsung devices, I liked that it is thinner and lighter. The all-polycarbonate body feels strong in the phone but its back easily captures fingerprints. The phone has a thick chin on the underside of the screen. The cutout comes at the top of the display for the selfie camera.

On the left side, there is a large SIM tray for two SIM cards and a microSD card. The headphone jack, USB Type-C port, and a speaker are at the bottom. In the back is Samsung's Prism Crush pattern, in which we have a blue color variant for review. This phone is also available in black or white colors. At the rear, there is a quad-camera setup, set in a rectangular module and it doesn't pan out too much, which is a good thing.

Overall, the Samsung A31 was comfortable to use on a daily basis during this review. It's a bit wide and it can't be said easy to get to the top of the display, but the One UI has some gestures available to make it easier. After seeing several phones in this series with similar back patterns, we now find the design a bit boring. The box content includes a silicon case, a charger, a USB cable, and a headset.

The Samsung A31 has a Sharp 6.4-inch full-HD (1080x2400 pixels) Super AMOLED display. I found it more than adequate in terms of brightness, even in daylight. The display is flat, but there are no sharp edges, so there is no problem in using gestures. There is an in-display fingerprint sensor, which is not very fast, but it works well as long as you don't press it with pressure.

Its performance is a big issue. Samsung has used the MediaTek Helio P65 octa-core chipset and I wouldn't have bothered with this processor if it was in a Rs 10,000 smartphone, but I can't be happier with the inclusion of this processor in a Rs 21,999 smartphone. Even in the Samsung Galaxy M21, the company has used the Exynos 9611 chipset, which is also very low in cost.

Samsung's One UI 2.1 based on Android 10 also seems a bit sluggish overall. When I was switching between apps, the lag was constantly coming up in the animation. One UI comes with a lot of shortcuts, themes, and gestures for customization. There is also Dolby Atmos, but only for wired and wireless headphones.

The Galaxy A31 supports Google's Widevine L1 certification, which means that video streaming apps can play content in the original resolution of the display. The single speaker is loud enough but the audio quality is average. Simple games run well, but heavy games like Asphalt 9: Legends or PUBG Mobile run on light graphics. When I played the game for a long time I found that the phone started heating up.

If you talk about the best feature included in the Galaxy A31, then it will be its battery life. The 5,000mAh battery in our HD video loop test lasted 18 hours and 11 minutes, which is very good. Even with regular use, I was able to easily withdraw more than a day at full charge. It has 15W fast charging, allowing you to charge up to 50 percent of the battery in an hour, but it takes more than two hours to fully charge.

Samsung Galaxy A31 has four cameras at the back of the smartphone includes a 48-megapixel primary sensor, 8-megapixel wide-angle lens, a 5-megapixel depth camera, and a 5-megapixel macro camera. The apertures of all cameras are not very impressive, even the main camera only comes with F / 2.0 aperture. The front camera comes with a 20-megapixel sensor.

In this, you get Samsung's 'Scene Optimizer' AI engine and an option to save photos and videos in HEIF and HEVC formats. The main sensor captures decent looking photos in a good light. Photos are captured by default as 12-megapixel shots, but you can shoot at a full 48-megapixel resolution if necessary. In low light, the noise is reduced, but this reduces the detail. And there is no night mode to improve them.


The front camera comes with a 20-megapixel sensor. The selfie camera captures 12-megapixel photos by default. However, you can also shoot at full resolution. Selfie usually comes in handy when shooting outdoors in broad daylight. The skin tone seems slightly warm. The camera struggles to make good detail in low light and often you get the soft texture and weak details.

Verdict

I was struggling to find a good reason to call the Samsung Galaxy A31 the best, and I honestly say that I could not find any such reason in it. It seems like Samsung launched it to fill the price gap between the Galaxy A50s and the Galaxy A51. Battery life can be said to be the only best feature of this phone, as well as good build quality and display.

However, below-average performing chipsets and weak cameras are faults that you cannot ignore after paying more than Rs 20,000. Even if its price falls, the market still has options equipped with much more powerful features like Samsung's own Samsung Galaxy A50s and Samsung Galaxy M31 or Realme and Xiaomi phones.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy A31 cameras are very weak and lack many features, which you will find in many phones of lesser value.
