Styling - No Not A Vespa

Bajaj Chetak is an electric retro-styling scooter, which looks quite attractive. To give the feel of the iconic Chetak scooter, the company has considered it better to launch it in retro-styling like Chetak instead of completely new styling. Curvy bodywork, multi-spoke wheels, and contoured seat work make the design look great. It may be said that the original Chetak scooter was based on the Vespa Sprint, so the styling of the electric Chetak is inspired by the modern Vespa scooters.

Urban And Premium scooter

Chetak Electric will be a premium product. It has superb switchgear, full-LED lighting, and a digital console. Bajaj Auto has used high-quality the material in places like mirrors, side stands, and footpegs of this electric scooter. It will also be one of the few scooters sold in the country that comes with a metal body. The contrast stitching on the scooter's seat gives it a premium feel. The joints on the body panels of Chetak Electric are rarely seen and the entire back of it looks like just one unit. Due to this, the manufacturing cost of the scooter will be slightly increased, but due to these, Chetak seems quite premium.

Power and range

The Bajaj Chetak has a 4kW electric motor and an IP67-rated lithium-ion battery pack. Its battery is not removable, meaning it cannot be removed from the scooter. The scooter has two riding modes - Eco and Sport. Bajaj Auto claims that this electric scooter will run 95 km in Eco mode and 85 km in Sport mode once fully charged. The company has said that this range of scooters has been achieved by driving on the roads in Pune (Real-World Testing). This means that the ARAI certified range will be higher than this.

Price of both variants

The price of the urban variant with drum brake is Rs 1 lakh and the premium variant with disc brake is priced at Rs 1.15 lakh. Urban Variant has been given metallic paint with a glossy finish with solid color and some cosmetic changes to the premium variant.

Cost

The price of Chetak will be announced at the time of its launch. But during the event, the company's MD Rajiv Bajaj has made a hint about its price. Rajiv has said that the price of Chetak Electric will be attractive, but not aggressive. He said that it would not cost more than Rs 1.5 lakh. According to the company, we have achieved the localization required to manufacture Bajaj Chetak, so its price will be attractive. Apart from this, to keep the cost of the scooter down, it includes parts like rear drum brake and simple digital display instead of TFT. It is believed that the price of this Bajaj electric scooter will be less than Rs 1.5 lakh. Chetak Electric is also eligible for the FAME II subsidy.

Availability

Bajaj will use its existing network to sell Chetak Electric. It will be launched in a phased manner. The scooter will first be launched in Pune in January 2020. Shortly thereafter, the company will launch it in Bengaluru. It will then be planned to launch in other cities as per the market reaction.

Competition

According to reports, the initial sale of Bajaj Chetak will be in Pune. Initially, the company will sell it from the KTM showroom. After this, it will be available for sale in Bangalore and then other metro cities. In the market, Chetak Electric Scooter will compete with scooters like Okinawa i-Pres and Athar 450.
