Samsung Galaxy M31 Design

At first glance, it is difficult to differentiate between the Samsung Galaxy M30 Galaxy M31. Both smartphones have a 6.4-inch display with Waterdrop Notch, which Samsung calls the Infinity U display, the bezels are not thin, but at this price These are acceptable. The earpiece is smooth and sits just above the display in the frame of the smartphone. Like other M series smartphones for materials, Samsung has used plastic to manufacture the Galaxy M31.

The Galaxy M31 feels comfortable to lift and hold. The sides are slightly curved which helps hold. Samsung has deployed power and volume buttons on the right side of the device. The power button is easy to access but the volume button can be posted better. On the left is the SIM tray that does not flow completely on our review unit. The Galaxy M31 has a 3.5mm headphone jack, primary microphone, USB Type-C port, and a speaker at the bottom. The top only has a secondary microphone.

When you look behind the Galaxy M31, you will see some changes. The camera module is similar to the Galaxy M30 but it now packs a fourth camera. Next to it is the fingerprint scanner which is easy to use while holding the smartphone.

The weight of 191g makes the device feel a bit heavier. The Galaxy M31 is packed in a large 6,000mAh battery. Samsung has a 15W charger in the box, which helps in charging multiple times. The company offers the Galaxy M31 in two colors, Ocean Blue and Space Black.

Samsung Galaxy M31 specifications and features

Like we already said that there is not much difference between M30 and M31. The spec sheet of the Galaxy M31 is similar to the Galaxy M30. It sports a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with full-HD + resolution. The display has good viewing angles and is viewable on the outside. There are two color profiles to choose from, and you can also change the white balance. It also has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection which can make it easily pick up some scratches as well.

Samsung has retained the Exynos 9611 SoC in the Galaxy M31. It is an octa-core processor with four performance ARM Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.3GHz and four efficiency Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7GHz. For graphics, it has a Mali-G72 GPU. You get a choice between 6GB RAM and 64GB storage variant and 128GB storage variant. 15,999 or Rs. 16,999 respectively. However, Samsung Rs. 1,000 discount which prices Rs. 14,999 and Rs. 15,999 respectively. The duration of this proposal has not been specified.

On the software front, Samsung ships the new Galaxy M31 with OneUI 2.0 on top of Android 10.1. The software is the same as we have seen on the recently launched Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite. We found a fair amount of bloatware on the Galaxy M31. In addition to the Google app on smartphones, Netflix, Facebook, Candy Crush Saga, and Samsung Max were preloaded. Samsung also has its own apps such as My Galaxy and Samsung Shop. We found that my Galaxy was a bother because it kept forwarding information during the day.

The Galaxy M31 has two nano-SIM slots and has support for 4G as well as VoLTE. It also supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Storage is expandable up to 512GB.

Dolby Atmos is available but only works with earphones. Digital wellbeing and parental controls are also present on the device. Traditional gestures such as double tap to wake, gesture screenshots are also present on the Galaxy M31. You also get the option to dig out a three-button navigation layout in favor of full-screen gestures. The Galaxy M31 gets Android 10 goodies like Dark Mode and Focus Mode, which can be enabled very easily via the notification shade.

Samsung Galaxy M31 performance and battery life

The fingerprint scanner is quick to unlock the smartphone, and the selfie camera does a good job with facial recognition. We enjoyed watching the content on the AMOLED display. There is WideWine L1 support which should let you stream full-HD content.

Samsung has bumped up the RAM on the Galaxy M31 compared to its predecessor which should give it some advantage when multitasking. We did not notice any lag or stutter while using the smartphone. The device is fast enough to load apps, although larger apps take a bit longer. Since RAM is plenty, multitasking is a breeze and we didn't wait for an app to reload itself.

We ran our usual benchmarks on the Galaxy M31. In AnTuTu, it managed to score 191,981, which is higher than the Galaxy M30. The Galaxy M31 scored 348 and 1,247 respectively in Geekbench's single-core and multi-core tests. For the graphics benchmark, the Galaxy M31 managed 41fps in the GFXBench T-Rex and 8.9fps in the GFXBench Car Chase.

With our usage, the battery lasted for two days without any problems. If battery life is important to you, the Galaxy M31 will not disappoint.

We played PUBG Mobile on the Galaxy M31 and the game went into high settings by default with HD and set the frame to high graphics by default. The game was playable in these settings and we didn't notice any issues. After playing for 20 minutes we reported four percent of the battery falling, and the device became warm to the touch. The large battery will allow you to play for quite a long time without the need to plug the smartphone into the charger. In our HD video loop test, it lasted 22 hours, 31 minutes.

Samsung Galaxy M31 Camera

The Galaxy M31 has a quad-camera setup at the rear and a 32-megapixel selfie shooter. The Galaxy M31's primary camera has 64-megapixel resolution and f / 1.8 aperture. This camera takes 16-megapixel bin shots by default but you can switch to full resolution. There is also an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with a 123-degree field and an f / 2.2 aperture. The other two are 5-megapixel depth sensors and a 5-megapixel macro camera. Samsung's camera app is the same as before and we can find our way around it very easily. There is a toggle to switch between primary and wide-angle cameras. The Scene Optimizer is quick to detect scenes and set the camera accordingly.

The Galaxy M31 is capable of separating subjects and backgrounds while providing natural depth effects during close-up shooting. However, we felt that the bright colors were reproduced too aggressively, resulting in loss of detail. The macro camera takes decent shots outdoors but the quality is poor when indoors. The output is limited to 5 megapixels in resolution.

In low light, the Galaxy M31 takes longer to lock focus, so you'll need to be patient while taking shots. Photos taken in low light look good but you can see the fine grain in the output when zoomed in. Switching to night mode reduces the grain in the output.

The selfie taken with the Galaxy M31 is decent when shot with ample lighting all around, but in low light, the quality goes down a notch and the results are grainy.

Portrait shots were good and the camera app gives you the option to set the level of blur before taking a shot. The edge detection is very good and the Galaxy M31 does a good job separating the subject from the background.

Video recording maxes out at 4K for the primary rear camera and selfie shooter. During the shooting during the day, the Galaxy M31 meter properly lighted, however, we found that the footage was not well stabilized. There is a Super Steady mode that uses a wide-angle-camera and crops the frame to reduce shake. We got a fairly stable output using this mode, but the video lacked detail. There is no stabilization at 4K.

Decision

Samsung has seen success with the Galaxy M30S, so it doesn't want to fix what's not broken. The work the company has done is upgrade the RAM, put in a fourth rear camera, and preloaded Android 10. The Galaxy M31 doesn't feel like a completely new device, but one for the Galaxy M30S Like update.

Battery life is still the main attraction, and we can easily go without plugging in for two days, some cannot compete very easily at this price level. Redmi Note 8 Pro, 5 14,597 (review) and Realme X2 Note 17,999 (review) will still give you more bang for your buck overall, but if you don't care about the benchmark score and just want a device that is original It has a great battery covering things, the Galaxy M31 will work fine.

The Exynos 9611 is capable, but we wouldn't complain if this phone had a more powerful processor to prevent competition. The upgrade makes this phone slightly better and more versatile but is not an important step.
